Minolta CLE (1980)

The 1980 Minolta CLE is descended from the Leitz Minolta/Leica CL, an Osaka, Japan-made product of Minolta and Leica's 1971 collaboration.

Notably, it was the world's first rangefinder camera with interchangeable lenses and TTL automatic and manual exposure.

Internally, the CLE is based on the Minolta XG-series SLRs, sharing its metering and aperture-priority auto exposure system. Cosmetically, its shutter dial, release button and film advance are also carried over from the XG.

The viewfinder has projected framelines for 28, 40 and 90mm focal lengths, with excellent Rokkor M-mount lenses available. However, here it's shown with my Leitz Wetzlar Summicron-C 40mm f/2 lens, which normally came with the Leica CL.

Until the Konica Hexar RF was introduced in 1999, the Minolta CLE was, without question, the best non-Leica M-mount rangefinder camera available. Some say it still is, but it also now has some more tough competition from Voigtländer's R series.

Appropriate to the era, I've photographed the camera with my well-worn Levi's denim jacket from 1977.
