R8990. Pacer and Sprinter at Manchester Victoria.

            R8990.  In the early years of rail privatisation some of the new Train Operating Companies (TOCs) ran a promotion in conjunction with the daily papers to drum up new business.  By collecting vouchers from the papers, one could get cheap flat rate tickets to anywhere on a given TOC's network.  

I took advantage of this and, together with a work colleague and other friends, travelled the length and breadth of the country.  The first two trips were to Plymouth and Glasgow with Virgin Trains starting from Milton Keynes as this was the nearest station on the Virgin Trains network to where I was living at the time.  The third trip was to Liverpool, also starting from Milton Keynes.    

On arrival in Liverpool we took a ride on the Merseyrail Electrics to Birkenhead and New Brighton and then sampled the Mersey Ferry as a way of returning to Liverpool.  From here we took to the rails again and bounced our way to Manchester in a Pacer unit; then we went to Victoria Station and bounced our way back to Liverpool again.  

Before we departed, however, I took a quick snap of 150/1 Class DMU 150 156 bound for Clitheroe and our 142 Class Pacer 142 053.  Despite privatisation, they are still in the British Rail Regional Railways Sector livery.  

Our outward trip to Manchester had been over the old Cheshire Lines Committee route, but our return trip to Liverpool was on the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway route.
