Panzersperre Roetgen / Kampfwagenhindernis Typ 1939 bis 36t

Die Panzersperre bei Roetgen gehört zu einer Ausbauphase des Westwalls von 1939, die die Stadt Aachen einschloss („Vorstellung Aachen“). Roetgen war der erste Ort in Deutschland, der von amerikanischen Truppen eingenommen wurde. Der 3. US-Panzer-Division gelang hier am 13. September 1944 der erste Durchbruch durch den Westwall.

Die Panzersperre bei Roetgen
Die etwa 100 Meter lange, fünfzügige Panzersperre sollte die Talenge des Grölisbaches mit der von Roetgen nach Norden führenden Straße absperren. Das in Ost-West-Richtung verlaufende Bauwerk durchzieht das Wiesengelände westlich der Straße, überquert den Grölisbach und endet im Wald. Der Straßendurchlass konnte mit Drehschranken geschlossen werden. Auf der östlichen Straßenseite ist eine Mauer mit zum Hang hin abknickendem Verlauf erhalten. Durch diese war das Schussfeld für einen Maschinengewehrbunker frei, der 70 Meter südöstlich der Schranke lag. Er sollte die Sperre gegen Sprengtrupps sichern.

Durchbruch der US-Armee
Am 12. September 1944 besetzten amerikanische Verbände das belgische Raeren. Eine Abteilung der 3. US-Panzer-Division überschritt um 14.51 Uhr westlich von Roetgen die Grenze. Die Deutschen sprengten daraufhin die Brücke über den Schleebach und schlossen die Schranken der Panzersperre. Es folgten mehrere vergebliche Vorstöße der Amerikaner. Am Morgen des 13. Septembers wurde der Sperrenbereich schließlich eingenommen und der Weg Richtung Rott und den Raum Walheim war frei.
