Each time I take a bird photo, I think that this is my favorite bird of them all.  But, I get an extra thrill each time I photo the male red-bellied woodpecker.  I REALLY think that this bird with its 'zebra' back and it's red crown IS my favorite of them all!  And, I love sharing his photo with you!  :)

The red-bellied woodpecker hammers fruit and nuts into trees for winter food.  To nest, the male and female excavate a cavity in a tree and raise one brood a year.  They will return to the same tree the next year and excavate a cavity below the previous years nesting cavity.  In the wild, these birds could live up to 20 years!
