Scarborough North Bay Steps, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England

Carrying on with my Scarborough long exposure mini series. This is a set of stairs that goes down to the beach but is of course covered during high tide. The tide was receding slightly when I took this image. Its an image I have been wanting again to do for a while but the conditions have not been quite right.

When I was processing this image, I tried the normal B&W conversion but it just didn't work for this image so tried processing it through Colour Efex Pro and this was the result. Also cropped it to a ratio 2:1 which works well and gets rid of the wasted space above the steps, a square crop just didn't work at all. You may think the horizon looks odd, well it was raining out there and there must have been sun beaming through the clouds which gives the horizon an odd look. I thought the image was blurred originally but it wasn't.

Scarborough (/ˈskɑrbrə/ or /ˈskɑrbərə/) is a town on the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town lies between 10-230 feet (3-70 m) above sea level, rising steeply northward and westward from the harbour onto limestone cliffs. The older part of the town lies around the harbour and is protected by a rocky headland.

With a population of around 50,000 Scarborough is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. The town has fishing and service industries, including a growing digital and creative economy, as well as being a tourist destination.

Inhabitants of the town are known as Scarborians, or as Algerinos by people in Whitby. The origin of this nickname is thought to come from a ship called the Algerino which sunk off the bay of Scarborough; the locals at Scarborough refused to assist the ship in peril and fishermen took a more dangerous route in a lifeboat from Whitby, to the coast of Ravenscar, in a successful effort to save sailors of the Algerino. In an attempt to rid the town of the embarrassing story associated with the nickname, some inhabitants proposed that Algerino was a promiscuous individual of Italian descent who is supposed to have lain with many Scarborough females whilst their partners were at war.
