The Tree at Egton Moor, North Yorkshire Moors, Scarborough and District, North Yorkshire, England

Been away up North for the last few days and I thought it would be perfect to try out my new camera and my new tripod. Met up with fellow friend and photographer Mark Hepples and had a ride out to Egton Moor in the North Yorkshire Moors, not too far away from Whitby.

We had been checking the weather forecast all week and it said it was going to be a clear night which thankfully it was. We particularly wanted this tree in our images as this tree is all alone on this moor so we thought it would add something to our images. At first we went down a wrong road and got little lost despite having maps (oops) but then found it however we did have to walk over the tree in almost pitch black with only help from our head torches.

Anyway Mark Hepples went and setup and so did I however trying to get my head around the new menus in my camera was proving more difficult than I thought in the pitch black of the Yorkshire Moors with a freezing wind howling (also had no gloves either!). Even though the A77 is very much similar to my old A700 it is also a completely different beast entirely. I finally figured out the menus and setup my brand new tripod too and this developed an annoying wobble, argggg! At this point I was thinking that here is not the best place to be trying out new camera equipment that your not use to lol. I persevered and finally figured out that I was putting the camera on wrong on the tripod head, problem sorted!

This image is completely out of my comfort zone and is new to me so it took alot of trial and error to get this image which I am well chuffed about. The orange glow you see is not the sunset but infact light pollution from the nearest town in that direction Pickering. Our eyes could not see this believe it not but the camera could. At first I didn't like it but then with it backdropped behind the tree it added a nice silhouette. We honestly thought that it would be light pollution free out here but its not, you really have to go out into the sticks to get some really detailed star photography.

No the processing of this was bit difficult too. I had to shoot in ISO 3200 so bit noisy so used Noiseware Pro to reduce the noise which did the trick. The problem that I had was balancing the orange glow and the detail in the sky and I think I have just balanced it OK.

On the talk of noise reduction software, anyone use Topaze DeNoise 5? Whats its like?

I have certainly learned a few things from this shoot :-) Anyway hope you all have a good day!

The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains the Solar System. This name derives from its appearance as a dim "milky" glowing band arching across the night sky, in which the naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars. The term "Milky Way" is a translation of the Classical Latin via lactea, from the Hellenistic Greek γαλαξίας κύκλος (pr. galaxías kýklos, "milky circle"). The Milky Way appears like a band because it is a disk-shaped structure being viewed from inside. The fact that this faint band of light is made up of stars was proven in 1610 when Galileo Galilei used his telescope to resolve it into individual stars. In the 1920s, observations by astronomer Edwin Hubble showed that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies.

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy 100,000–120,000 light-years in diameter containing 200–400 billion stars. It may contain at least as many planets, with an estimated 10 billion of those orbiting in the habitable zone of their parent stars. Solar System is located within the disk, around two thirds of the way out from the Galactic Center, on the inner edge of a spiral-shaped concentration of gas and dust called the Orion–Cygnus Arm. The stars in the inner ≈10,000 light-years are organized in a bulge and one or more bars. The very center is marked by an intense radio source named Sagittarius A* which is likely to be a supermassive black hole. The Galaxy rotates differentially, faster towards the center and slower towards the outer edge. The rotational period is about 200 million years at the position of the Sun. The Galaxy as a whole is moving at a velocity of 552 to 630 km per second, depending on the relative frame of reference. It is estimated to be about 13.2 billion years old, nearly as old as the Universe. Surrounded by several smaller satellite galaxies, the Milky Way is part of the Local Group of galaxies, which forms a subcomponent of the Virgo Supercluster.
