The Sage, Gateshead, England

I have been away for a week visiting family and friends hence the reason for me being a little bit quiet on here.

This image was taken during a trip up to Newcastle. I got up a bit early get this image so I could make sure no one was around and it was quiet. Well it was for about 10 minutes until 3 lads came up to me (all with bottles of drink in theirs hands) and looking a bit worse for wear. They seemed polite and asked why I was taking a picture of the Sage before moving on. The next guy that came up was a local Geordie bin man, asking me the same question and few questions about my camera. I later saw this chap later on in the day clearing up rubbish from the street with a nice shiny Canon 5d MK2 around his neck with a nice zoom lens (sadly couldn't make out what lens it was). I suppose that is one great way to get some good images of the city and have the camera with you all the time.

The final thing that happened while I was waiting for this image to process was that there was a group of 4 or 5 lads about 50 metres away from me and they were on a pontoon where a small boat was moored up, next thing the two guys who this boat belonged too just ran down to them, these lads were only trying to steal their boat!! Fortunately they failed in their attempt but after that they headed my way. This was my cue to move on and head back to the hotel :-). All this happened in the space of about 40 minutes on Newcastle's Quayside.

I am really happy with this image however the sun was quite bright on the righthand side of the frame as you might be able to see which caused the righthand side of the frame to be darker. I am not sure if to crop this to square to minimise it or just leave it, what do you think? Not sure if this will work better in B&W either, I might do a version to compare.

Information
The centre occupies a curved glass and stainless steel building designed by Foster and Partners, Buro Happold (structural engineering), Mott MacDonald (building services) and Arup (acoustics), with views of Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides, the Tyne Bridge, and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Foster and Partners were selected following an architectural design competition managed by RIBA Competitions.

Planning for the centre began in the early 1990s, when the Northern Sinfonia orchestra, with encouragement from Northern Arts, began working on plans for a new concert hall. They were soon joined by regional folk music development agency Folkworks, which ensured that the needs of the region's traditional music were taken into consideration; folk music is well represented in the Sage's programme of events, alongside classical, jazz, acoustic, indie, country, world, electronic and dance. Practice spaces for professional musicians, students and amateurs were an important part of the provision.

The planning and construction process cost over £70 million, which was raised primarily through National Lottery grants. The contractor was Laing O'Rourke. The centre has a range of patrons, notably Sage Group which contributed a large sum of money to have the building named after it. Sage plc has helped support the charitable activities of The Sage Gateshead since its conception. The venue opened over the weekend 17 – 19 December 2004.

The Sage Gateshead is also available as a conference venue: for example it hosted the Labour Party's Spring conference in February 2005. It will also be hosting the Liberal Democrat Party conference in March 2012. In August 2009, the National Union of Students announced that their 2010 and 2011 National Conferences would be held at the Sage Gateshead
