My panoramic of Ponytail taught me that when viewed small, it is hard for people to know just how big the waterfall is, or how cool it is to walk behind it.

Afraid that an earlier panoramic time-lapse might not “show up” in scale, I went to the part of the trail that afforded a good view of the falls with my wide angle and then asked Caitlin to walk across the frame as I took a number of shots which I planned on blending together to give people an idea of what it is like to walk behind Ponytail Falls.

When taking the photograph, I probably should have opted for a wider aperture to freeze Caitlin more. At the time, I wanted to ensure adequate waterblur, but I was able to “fake” the waterblur by digitally blending the waterfall of each exposure with a 25% lightness channel applied to the mask (to pick out just the falls).

I should have also taken more time to ask Caitlin to start walking from off the frame, but she was quite far away and I was unsure she could hear me from there.

Pro Contrast was used to fix some of the overcorrection to the white balance—it was balanced for shade.
