Normally when you think of getting married at a city hall, you think cheap. But this isn’t the case if it is the fourth and final day of an Indian Muslim wedding and the city hall is San Francisco.

Add to the mix 20 or so lamps installed by the offical photographer and a spotlight manned by a photographers assistant and you have a recipe for some awesome panoramics. Too bad I didn’t have a tripod.

When the couple was alone for once with the spotlight on them and everyone sitting down. I knew I had to try one more time. It’s not fun when you are running out of digital film and you are toying between ISO noise and getting the shutter speed fast enough to handhold the shot.

You can tell which ones were installed because the halogens run a bit cooler than the building lights. Strangely, the spotlight runs significantly cooler than that!

The spotlight is about four stops brighting than the background and about two stops brighter than the ambient lighting. Because of this, I used digital blending to recover the detail in the image foreground (shadow) and the wedding couple in spotlight (highlights). I didn’t correct the color locally so that the color, not the brightness makes clear the spotlight is bright.

I think this shot is definitely DVD case material. C— will be pleased. (By the way, you can see getting her camera ready for the next moment on the stairs to the left.)
