Gua ling gao (bitter herb jello) - a photo on Flickriver

            This very bitter "herb jello" is served with honey and a creamy egg nog-like sauce to help sweeten the "dessert."  Gua ling gao is very similar looking to shien tsao, another herbal jello that is black, but nowhere near as bitter.

Medicinally, gua ling gao is supposed to be very fortifying for women.  As well, it has a cooling effect.  Here, the jello is topped with chunks of pineapple.
