Loving County Courthouse 1 - a photo on Flickriver

The Loving County Courthouse in Mentone, Texas is the only county listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the Moderne-Style in 1935, the 2-story brick and tile structure is a simple Depression-era governmental building. The facades are nearly identical with slight variations in the entrances and in windows. On the upper floor above each entrance is a paired window. Bars on the jail windows are visible in image 2. The centrally situated entrances are slightly recessed between two simulated pilasters of a different colored brick from the building. Concrete steps between brick and concrete abutments lead to the doors. A large cast stone element with clipped corners constitutes the lintel above the door, reading "Loving County Court-House 1935." Aside from this concession to ornamentation, the structure has only one other decorative element and that is an understated stringcourse of corbelled brick near the top of the structure. The parapet is tiled. Designed by Pecos, Texas architect Evan J. Wood, the building replaced a temporary 19341 courthouse. The courthouse is the most prominent building in the sparsely populated county. The nomination form contains floor plans, site plan, an elevation diagram, a 1939 photo of the courthouse, and various exterior and interior shots.
