Child Labour in Belfast Salvage Depot

            John Eccles and John Saunders working on army service shoes at the US Army's Quartermaster Salvage Depot on Rydalmere Street in Belfast. 

Described in the accompanying caption as "civilian workers" and "learning a trade" both Eccles and Saunders are clearly under 16 years of age. The more common narrative for children during wartime usually portrays them as evacuees, yet many in their early teenage years were in full-time employment. Moreover, the availability of secondary education was often defined by social background and it was only with the introduction of the 1947 Education Act (Northern Ireland) that all children over 11 received free secondary education.

Both Eccles and Saunders are wearing the army's Blue-Denim Work Uniform, the jackets being so oversized on the two boys that Eccles has the sleeves rolled back to the elbows Saunders has tied his at the wrists with twine.
