side-blotched lizard portrait - a photo on Flickriver

            My first reptile find of the year is this Side-Blotched Lizard. 
The side-blotched lizard (uta stansburiana) is one of the most common and prolific lizards in the american southwest.  The males can be quite beautiful with a redish background color and turquoise blue spots on their backs like the one pictured here.  Sideblotched lizards get their common English name from the dark blotch behind their front legs.  

My family and I took a trip to southern Utah this last weekend to escape the winter cold and spend some time in some of my favorite places hiking and getting some sun and warmth.  Although its still winter I was able to turn up 3 species of lizards and 1 species of frog  and a couple of red-eared slider turtles.  More photos to come. 

Finding these subjects gave me more opportunities to test using my Panasonic 200mm F2.8 lens as a macro lens by adding AF extension tubes.
