utah mountain kingsnake - a photo on Flickriver

            A Utah Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis pyromelana infralabialis) seen on a hike in Utah recently.  It is always magical to come across one of these snakes in the wild. They are rarely out in the open during the daytime since their colors really make them stand out.  It is amazing how much these colors can blend into dappled shade though especially in a pile of leaves.  These snakes are found in Utah and northern Arizona at elevations between 5000 and over 8000 feet.  They feed on a wide variety of prey items including mice, voles, bats, ground squirrels, lizards and snakes.  They are not venomous and are completely harmless to humans yet many humans mistake them for coral snakes and kill them out of fear even though coral snakes do not exist in the range of this snake. 

If you are hiking in the mountains of western North America and see a tri-colored snake like this it is one of many different types of mountain kingsnakes.  Count yourself lucky to cross paths with it on one of the rare minutes it was not hidden in a rock pile, rocky crevice or in a burrow somewhere and leave it alone.  Red meets black OK Jack.
