The ill-fated Blériot Type LXXIII / Type 73 before its fatal first flight seen at Villacoublay [France, 1918]

            The Blériot designed several large four-engined aeroplanes during the Great war, all from the same basic principle to obtain the best stability in flight. The principle was the setting of the four engines vlose together around the fuselage, which had according to the patent allotted the best stability during four-engined flight but also in three-engine flight (one enghine stopped because of damage).
This big night bomber (Bn : Bombardier de Nuit) with a crew of three is seen before the first test flight in July 1918 at the airfield Villacoublay. This heavy night bomber was identified by Blériot as the Type LXXIII / Type 73, the Blériot factory still used Roman numerals for identification of their designs. The machine was powered by four Hispano-Suiza 8 Fb engines rated at 300 hp each. 
Due to its weak tail section the machine the tail broke off during an emergency bank during its first flight, crashing in the ground ablaze. The poor test pilot perished in the fire.
On the original picture is at the reverse a stamp of the Section Technique de l'Aéronautique (S.T.Aé].
