The Wyoming High Country Lodge, about 30 miles into the Bighorn National Forest from Lovell, Wyoming, has for a number of years been one of my top favorite places to visit for a few days in late summer or early fall. The elevation is about 9,000 feet, so even on smoky nights, the air is clear and the clear-sky-viewing is spectacular. The accommodations are simple but pretty, complete, entirely comfortable and spotless, and the meals, included in the price, are home-made and hard to beat for quality. There's a big old stone fireplace in the common room and plenty of wood, great for sitting around chatting long into the night. There's lots of hiking and ATVing to be done nearby. The cultural and historical Wyoming Medicine Wheel site is only a mile away. There's wildlife - especially moose- coming to the creek in front of the lodge every day. Until the end of summer, 2023, the trio of managers were the nicest people you could ever hope to meet and made every stay an outstanding experience. While ownership has not changed (to my knowledge as of this writing), after 8 or 10 years of unceasing hard work, all three moved on to the next phases of their lives.It was those three managers - Matt, and Jim and Emily - who enthusiastically enabled an annual star-gazing party led by Ted Williams of the Rittenhouse Society and Muddy Run Observatory in Pennsylvania.

In part because of the loss of the long-time managers,Ted is exploring other dark sky venues in the west for future events, given the uncertainty of the lodge's future. I do not know whether management has been assumed by new people. I can only hope it continues to be the most wonderful back-country lodging that we have long enjoyed. I'm sending good vibes to the WHCL!
