            Wild grizzlies - and other bears - are inactive winter because of the difficulty securing food. If they can access food they don't need to go into a state of torpor (a lighter sleep than hibernation, which is what bears actually do). This is a very well cared-for captive bear at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana, where it leads the good life 24-7-365, with ample nutritious food and entertainment, including toys and other stimuli in its outdoor enclosure and within its "behind the scenes" den.  

The bear was enjoying its rotation in the large outdoor compound. Because food is "hidden" around the outside space to give the bears little challenges, the ravens show up too, and often make off with morsels before the bears do. In this case, it looks more like the raven and the bear are communing rather than competing.  

The bears, wolves, and other wildlife at the center are in captivity for a variety of reasons. Some were found abandoned by their mother or were rescued after a disabling injury that rendered them unable to care for themselves in the wild. Others, such as this bear, were removed from the wild as young animals when they engaged in behavior that threatened humans in some way, generally the fault of humans that left attractants, such as dog food, outside where the bears found it and risked becoming aggressive to humans when they discovered they could be an easy source of food.
