Yellowstone faux pas?

The Great Northern's Parker through-truss bridge over the Yellowstone between Fairview and Cartwright is a familiar historical sight just south of the ND 200 bridge. Completed in 1913, it had a lift/draw span that was only raised once for testing, for steamer traffic on the Yellowstone and nearby Missouri Rivers was coming to an end (the nearby sister bridge to this span is in Snowden, Montana). It makes for an interesting structure these days, though, and was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1997. Its construction seems, in hindsight, a major faux pas considering the GN branch only made it to Watford City. Today, it serves as a pedestrian bridge that leads one from Sundheim Park on the west bank to the former railroad's tunnel on the east bank. (3-26-2024)
