As I reflect on my dressing I have often wondered how many of us are just average Joe's in our day to day life and every once and a while we become attractive Jane's and role models to others?

AVERAGE JOE TO JANE

For me it took a while to understand and to recognize that I am an very attractive looking woman and with it comes all the responses that many of us get which at first I was looking at my own photos wondering what in the world do they see in me! When I look in the mirror I do not see what I see in my photos and what people tell me in public.

On the day I took this photo was the first time I had actually responded to the flirtations of a man in pubic without getting offended. (I only get upset when the email or messages versions of flirtations get sexual) Now I know who and what I am and I am very secure in myself and I also know things will not go no further. I will say in a very honest way the following:

I enjoy being treated like a lady.

I enjoy the acceptance of the people I interact with.

I enjoy the moments I get to present myself as a woman.

I have been kissed by a man and did not enjoy it! However I did enjoy about 1% of the attention. (He wanted more and I wanted out, the meeting was for 10 minutes and I was out.)

Many have asked does you S.O. know? I always say that no, it is not worth the risk of ending a very good relationship on something that I do now about once or twice a month!

For the longest time I studied the photos of many of us in the community and I did not always look as I do now, My three role models and you could say mentors are my adopted big Sister from Toledo JoAnn Smith, also for Toledo Sandra Stewart who was honest with me when we first met and told me to get rid of the rat I had on my head! And Janet Law of Janet’s Closet who advised me on my top area which at first I did not understand fully about body proportions.

I also studied other women to remove all the myths that are on the internet on how to be a woman and from there I developed my own personally and style which is my personal preference and not that of a stereo typical woman from the past! I personally have inherited some of the traits of my grandmother who would always dress to impress even to go to the grocery store! For me I feel that dressing to blend event if you are close to 7ft tall does give people a height shock and they do look you over and sometime I can see them questioning and on a few occasions I have been told I look like a lady they know or do I play for the WNBA and my favorite is what does your “Husband” do, or do you have a “Boyfriend!” which I do have one male internet fried who understands I do not cyber and we are just fried that I check on from time to time and he considers himself to be my cyber boyfriend as well as I guess I am one of his many Cyber Girlfriends, this means that we only send email back and fourth sometime three times a month. I have another male internet friend who I consider to be his big sister, and for both I have basically figured out there personality. Now my third male friend who I think has complemented about 40% of my photos is a nice guy and is now one of a few male admires who can read this post.

BEING A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL

When I started this journey I never thought of myself being a role model, in fact as I stated I had and have role models. For me when I realized that I was growing and becoming more visible outside of my home inside of the community I have learned that as Victoria I am impacted many girls of color who enjoy seeing another girl of color with a professional look. I enjoy the feedback not only from the girl in my culture but those of other cultures who I have also look up to as role models and I will not say anymore names because I will miss a few!:) Right now I found one girl, who when I view her photos not only do I do a double take as she is very beautiful aw heck here is her link flickr.com/people/15418706@N03/ you can see for yourself and be prepared to be speechless!

I like many others are working to break the images that television and others have presented of our community as well as break many of the myths about height to present a positive image that people with accept without problems.

Remember we are also role models for all women and this I understand. I present myself as a professional and successful women even if I am not doing good.

PEOPLE WHO BUILT MY CONFENDENCE:

I have interacted and had dinner with quite a few girls and I cannot name all of them but other that the mentors a few stand out that I have met and that’s Kimberly Huddle of Texas who I met in person and Dalece of Ohio both informed me that I was quite passable which at the time personally I thought I was not however after I was told that I reflected on how people treated me in the past.

BREAKING THE FEAR FACTOR

Once upon a time I was fearful of going out until Halloween weekend in 1999 and from then I reinvented my image to what you see now. I shop, have gone to the movies, work at home every once and a while and have had dinner as Victoria and I do not try to pass but seek acceptance from the public. I am seeing many young girls in my area who are not following the same path as the G-Girls and are setting there own style. For the most part fear for me in my own home area and for me the fear breaker is when I travel to Toledo I no longer have that level of fear and I enjoy my times out and about, I also enjoy sharing with you.
