This Grocer's Ad of October, 1953 Has the Same Items of Today Except for the Shrimp and Oysters - Racism Even at the Grocers - from The Jackson Sun (Jackson Tennessee), October 15, 1953

            A disclaimer:  I posted the ads for the shrimp and oysters and the story of the NAACP getting the company to "do something" about the offending names of the shrimp and oysters (see "Racism Used As Food Branding" and "Interesting Name Change of the Week") back in 2009.  So, I wasn't really surprised to see this grocer's ad.  

I wanted to underscore the fact that contorted images of Black people and the curious monikers given to us by the White slaveowners when we arrived on these shores have always been used for profit.  Always.
