Arachnophilia - a photo on Flickriver

Arachnophilia

            I wondered why Louise Bourgeois named her large spider sculpture « Maman ».  It turns out that her mother, who died when Louise was 21, was a weaver, a restorer of antique tapestries, just as a spider patiently restores her web when it gets damaged. Behind the large sculpture (9.271m x 8.915m x 10.236m, i.e 30'5" x 29'3" x 33'7") you can see the National Gallery of Canada.

The original sculpture, at Tate Modern in London, England, was created in steel. Six castings were made in bronze: apart from this one in Ottawa, there is one at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, at Mari Art Museum in Tokyo, at the Quatar National Convention Center in Doha, and at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
