Coal for sugar

            I figured I'd round out the day's mini-theme of coal cars on the BNSF in 2023, with this entry from the loaded train I shot at Moran Jct. It turns out SUGX was pretty much exactly what I'd suspected it to be, private reporting mark of the American Crystal Sugar Co. At first glance it looks like any other unit train of aluminum coal cars on the run out of the Powder River Basin, but the first thing I noticed were the bottom dump doors. Also, they are not rotary cars, a modern take on the classic coal hopper. They are not destined for a power plant either. American Crystal Sugar maintains a pretty bare-bones transload in the northeast corner of North Dakota at Ardoch. There is a loop for unloading with a simple open-air bottom dump pit. Coal is then trucked to American Crystal facilities all over the Red River Valley.

A fun thing about shooting here is that after watching the whole train pass, you can go a half mile north on S 8th Rd and catch them headed in the opposite direction. I did just that but the clouds were not cooperative. September 7, 2023.
