Located off the western tip of Si Phan Don, Laos, no more than 3km away from the Cambodian border, Tat Somphamit is one of the most impressive waterfalls in south-east Asia and is positioned between the two islands of Don Xang and Don Khon. Consisting of a number of cascades as opposed to one major waterfall, Tat Somphamit is a dramatic sight and is a must for waterfall-lovers. The sound of the ensuing water is deafening and the scenery, a mixture of lunar-scapes and palm tress is bewildering. The waterfall rage over ragged boulders. Although a drop of only several metres, the volume and power of the falls is impressive and the ambience agreeable.The Somphamit waterfall is also known as the Li Phi Water fall. A second set of falls is located about 500 metres further downstream. Fishermen use traps and nets in the pools at the base of the falls. The waterfall is most impressive in the rainy season and quite different visiting the falls in the dry season.

De Li Phi waterval is één van de twee grootste watervallen van Zuidoost Azië. De waterval ligt vlakbij de grens van Cambodja langs de Mekong rivier gelegen bij het eiland Don Khon. Don Khon, één van de Vierduizend Eilandjes in de Mekong in het uiterste zuiden van Laos en enkel bereikbaar met een authentiek houten bootje. Het ultra-relaxed eiland is via een brug, gebouwd door de Franse kolonisten, verbonden met Don Det. Op Don Khon breng je de dag door in je hangmat samen met goed boek en een fris pintje binnen handbereik. Of je maakt een fietstochtje door het lieflijke landschap en stopt regelmatig op een idyllisch terrasje. We besluiten dan ook om morgen weer verder te gaan en het eiland te voet te verkennen. Op zo'n 20 minuten wandelen ten zuiden van de Franse spoorbrug bevindt zich de indrukwekkende Tat Somphamit waterval. Deze legendarische watervallen worden ook vaak Li Phi genoemd. Er stroomt hier in het regenseizoen flink wat water, onder een oorverdovend geraas, door dit rotsige stuk Mekong. De omgeving langs de rivier is prachtige groen en bijzonder indrukwekkend. Met een beetje geluk kan je er zoetwaterdolfijnen spotten.
