Diving into paradise: crystal clear waters and marine biodiversity

Koh Tao is a beautiful island located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 70 kilometers east of mainland Thailand. Part of an archipelago that also includes Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, the island is best known for its breathtaking natural beauty and diving and snorkeling opportunities. Koh Tao is known worldwide as one of the top destinations for divers. The island offers an abundance of diving schools and dive sites, ranging from shallow coral reefs to deep wrecks. The crystal clear waters and diverse marine biodiversity make it an ideal place to learn to dive or improve your diving skills. The island has several beautiful beaches with soft white sand and crystal clear water. These beaches offer excellent opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and relaxing. Koh Tao also has many opportunities for adventure activities such as hiking, rock climbing and kayaking. The island is covered in lush jungle and offers beautiful views from higher vantage points. Shark Bay is a diving location known for the opportunity to see reef sharks while diving. It is important to note that these sharks are usually harmless to divers and their presence adds to the appeal of this dive site. In addition to reef sharks, divers can enjoy a variety of marine life here, including tropical fish and beautiful corals.

The John Suwan viewpoint is located at the southernmost tip of Koh Tao. Depending on the weather, it's crucial to have water with you as it can get extremely hot on the way to the viewpoint and at the top. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. The path to the top is rocky, challenging, and uphill. It's best to wear sturdy footwear and avoid sandals or flip-flops. There are several rock blocks you need to scramble over, though many of them have larger ropes attached to assist you in climbing up. Just before reaching the top, you'll also need to maneuver through a few rock blocks and then pull yourself up at the top of the rocks.
Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with what is considered one of the most stunning views of Koh Tao: a perfect panoramic view of Chalok Baan Kao and Thian Og bays. On a clear day, you can also see Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Thanks to the view over the bays, you can capture beautiful photos of the crystal-clear turquoise water surrounding Koh Tao and the shallow coral reefs below. Koh Tao is een prachtig eiland gelegen in de Golf van Thailand, ongeveer 70 kilometer ten oosten van het vasteland van Thailand. Het eiland maakt deel uit van een eilandengroep die ook Koh Samui en Koh Phangan omvat, en staat vooral bekend om zijn adembenemende natuurlijke schoonheid en de mogelijkheden voor duiken en snorkelen. Koh Tao staat wereldwijd bekend als een van de topbestemmingen voor duikers. Het eiland biedt een overvloed aan duikscholen en duiklocaties, variërend van ondiepe koraalriffen tot diepe wrakken. Het eiland is bedekt met weelderige jungle en biedt prachtige uitzichten vanaf hoger gelegen uitkijkpunten.
Het John Suwan-uitkijkpunt is gelegen in het uiterste zuiden van Koh Tao. Afhankelijk van het weer is het erg belangrijk dat je water bij je hebt, want op weg naar het uitkijkpunt en op de top kan het extreem heet zijn. Temperaturen boven de 40 graden Celsius zijn geen uitzondering. Het pad naar de top is rotsachtig, zwaar en bergopwaarts. Het is het beste om goed schoeisel te dragen en geen sandalen of slippers. Er zijn een aantal rotsblokken waar je overheen moet klauteren, hoewel aan veel van de grotere touwen zijn vastgemaakt om je te helpen naar boven te klimmen. Vlak voordat je de top bereikt, moet je je ook door een paar rotsblokken heen wurmen en jezelf dan bovenaan de rotsen optrekken. Wanneer je de top bereikt, wordt je beloond met wat wordt beschouwd als een van de meest verbluffende uitzichten op Koh Tao: een perfect panoramisch uitzicht op de baaien van Chalok Baan Kao en Thian Og. Op een heldere dag kun je ook Koh Phangan en Koh Samui zien. Dankzij het uitzicht over de baaien kun je prachtige foto's maken van het turquoise heldere water rondom Koh Tao en de ondiepe koraalriffen eronder. John Suwan dankt zijn naam aan lokale landeigenaren zoals het voor het eerst werd ontdekt door de heer Suwan en zijn vriend de heer John. Het is belangrijk op te merken dat deze haaien meestal ongevaarlijk zijn voor duikers en de aanwezigheid ervan draagt bij aan de aantrekkingskracht van deze duikplek. Naast rifhaaien kunnen duikers hier genieten van een verscheidenheid aan zeeleven, waaronder tropische vissen en prachtige koralen.
