Twilight Snowkiting - giving new meaning to the frozen Gouwsea

Snowkiting is winter sport where people use kite power to glide on snow or ice. The sport is similar to kitesurfing, but with the footwear used in snowboarding or skiing. Snow kiteboarding, better known as snowkiting, is said to be the best thing that happened to kitesurfing. Now kiting addicts can feed their passion year-round by heading for the snowy hills, frozen lakes or open spaces with snowboards or skis and a kite! Snow kiteboarding is a versatile sport because it can be done in many locations where there is snow and in lighter wind. Snow kiters can take advantage of lighter winds than kitesurfers because there is much less resistance to the wind without the drag of water. Harder packed snow will have even less drag than deep powder; and the great variety of snowkiting spots and new types of terrain to choose from, add exciting possibilities! Snow kiteboarding generally follows the the basics of kitesurfing. You need to ensure if on a frozen lake that the ice is at least 6 or more inches thick. With lakes and any open area ensure there is enough of a snow base that you are not hitting the ice or unforeseen objects below. In the Netherlands it rarely happens that there is enough snow and wind for snow kiting. Now it's finally possible to snow kiting at the Gouwsea between Monnickendam, Volendam and Marken. Snow kiting gives endless possibilities and new meaning to the flat, frozen and snowy Gouwsea.

The blue hour comes from the French expression l'heure bleue, which refers to the period of twilight each evening where there is neither full daylight nor complete darkness. The time is considered special because of the quality of the light at this time of day. The moon just rised and the last Snow kitesurfer making his last moves on the Dutch Gouwsea located nearby Marken. The blue hour is a part of dusk and usually takes only ten minutes.

Snowkiten lijkt heel erg op kitesurfen. Het wordt alleen in de sneeuw gedaan, met ski's of een snowboard. Meestal worden dezelfde kites als bij het kitesurfen gebruikt. Het wordt door relatief weinig mensen beoefend, omdat er maar weinig locaties zijn om te snowkiten. In Nederland gebeurt het maar zelden dat er genoeg sneeuw en wind is om te snowkiten. Nu is het eindelijk zo ver om op de Gouwzee te snowkiten tussen Monnickendam, Volendam en Marken. Er ligt te veel sneeuw op goed te schaatsen maar er zijn volop snow- kitesurfers en ijszeilers. De sport kan zowel op bergen als op sneeuwvlaktes worden beoefend. De sneeuwvlaktes zijn perfect om te freestylen. Bijna alle tricks die je op het water tijdens het kitesurfen kan doen, kunnen ook in de sneeuw worden gedaan. Het kan op een gewoon snowboard, er zijn ook een paar fabrikanten die speciale boards voor het snowkiten maken. Net na zonsondergang bij bepaalde omstandigheden de lucht en de omgeving een blauwe kleur aannemen. De maan is opgekomenen en verlicht nog net genoeg voor de laatste sneeuwsurfer. Het blauwe uur is een onderdeel van de schemering en duurt meestal slechts een tiental minuten.
