NYC: The New York Academy of Medicine

            The New York Academy of Medicine was founded in 1847 by a group of leading area physicians as a voice for the metropolitan area medical profession. They immediately became involved in reform of both medical practice and public health. Early major accomplishments of the Fellows include the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Healththe first modern municipal public health authority in the United States, and a 1928 Academy report on maternal mortality that was eventually responsible for a drastic regional reduction in death at childbirth and set a precedent for the entire nation.  The Academy's more than 2,000 Fellows now include physicians, nurses, healthcare administrators, social workers and professionals in all fields dedicated to maintaining and improving health. 

The Academy moved to its current location, at 1216 Fifth Avenue, in 1926.  The gift from the Carnegie Foundation was esigned in Romanesque style by York & Sawyer and built by Mark Edlitz from 1925-26.  It was cited by the Municipal Art Society and Society of Architectural Historians in 1957 for the merit of its architecture.

For more than a hundred years, the Academy Libraryone of the three largest medical collections in the United Stateshas been open not only to all physicians, but to anyone wishing to consult the professional medical literature. To this day, the Academy Library is the only medical library in the metropolitan area open to the general public.
