San Francisco - Mission District: Taqueria El Farolito - Super Burrito

            El Farolito Taqueria, located at 2779 Mission Street, is a traditional, scruffy taqueria whose extended hours make it a popular place for after-party food.  Perennially atop the list of best burritos in San Francisco, El Farolito currently has nine locations in Northern California.  El Farolito's Super Burrito consists of one soft flour tortilla prepared with rice, beans, fresh tomato, onion, cilantro, salsa, cheese, sour cream, avocado and a choice of any meat or vegetarian.

The San Francisco burrito, or Mission-style burrito, is a regional variety of the Mexican-American burrito distinguished by the amount of rice and other ingredients and its sheer size.  The origins of the San Francisco burrito trace back to the 1960s with competing claims.  Raul and Michaela Duran are widely credited as selling the first San Francisco burritos in 1969 from their meat market, which was converted into La Cumbre Taqueria in 1972.  The owners of El Faro claim that their taqueria sold the first San Francisco burrito in 1961 to a group of firefighters using two 6-inch tortillas.
