O'ahu - Honolulu - Pearl Harbor: USS Missouri - Instrument of Surrender (United States Copy)

The Instrument of Surrender terminating the Second World War was signed aboard the USS Missouri, September 2, 1945, while she lay at anchor in Tokyo Bay. At 9:04, the Japanese representatives, Mamoru Shicemitsu, the Japanese Foreign Minister, and General Yoshijiro Umezu, the Chief of Staff, Japanese Army Headquarters, signed the instrument of their country's surrender. At 9:08, General of the Army Douglas Macarthur, the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, signed for all the Nations joined in the war against Japan. He was accompanied by Lieutenant General Jonathan W. Wainwright, the Commanding General at the Fall of Corregidor in 1942, and by Lieutenant General Arthur Percival, the Commanding General at the Fall of Singapore in the same year. At 9:12, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed for the United States. He was accompanied by Admiral William F. Halsey, Commander of the United States Third Fleet and by Rear Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, Deputy Chief of Staff to Admiral Nimitz. Representatives of the other Allied Nations the signed, completing the ceremony of surrender.

The USS-Missouri (BB-63), known as the Mighty Mo or Big Mo, is a United States Navy Iowa-class battleship. Ordered in 1940 and commissioned in 1944, it was the last battleship built by the United States. In the Pacific Theater, she fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, before serving as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan to end World War II. She fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, before being decommissioned in 1955. Reactivated and modernized in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan, the Missouri provided fire support during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Finally decommissioned in 1992, she remained on the Naval Register until her name was struck in 1995. In 1998, she became a museum ship moored at Foxtrot 5 Pier on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.
