NYC - Brooklyn Museum: "Manhattan" - a photo on Flickriver

Like his Continents on the Alexander Hamilton Custom House, Daniel Chester French's two large limestone allegorical figures of Brooklyn, and Manhattan, represent geographical location in human form. Manhattan sits aloof, with her foot on a chest of money. She is wearing a crown representing a skyscraper, holding a winged globe and surrounded with a Greek torso, the bows of three ships and a peacock. Brooklyn, on the other hand, is crowned with a laurel wreath and surrounded by a young boy reading, a church and a lyre.

French, the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial, was commissioned to design and oversee the carving of these statues for the Manhattan Bridge, representings the two boroughs linked by the bridge, in 1913--four years after its opening. The statues were completed and installed in 1916. The removal of the pylons in 1963 to facilitate modified traffic patterns found the statues relocated to the Brooklyn Museum--Manhattan to the left of the great portico, Brooklyn to the right. French was also selected to carve allegorical figures atop the columns and in the pediments of the center pavilion.

The Brooklyn Museum was designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966.
