Budapest - Erzsébetváros: Carl Lutz Memorial

            The Carl Lutz Memorial, at 12 Dob utca, was designed by Tamás Szabó in 1991.  Inscribed nearby in Hungarian is the Talmudic phrase: "Aki egy életen embert is megment mintha mintha egy egész világot mentene meg" (Whoever saves a life is considered as if he has saved an entire world)

Carl Lutz (1895-1975) was a Swiss Diplomat who served as the Swiss Vice-Consul in Budapest, Hungary, from 1942 until the end of World War II. He is credited with diplomatically saving over 62,000 Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, the largest such civilian rescue operation of Jewish people during the Second World War.
