Niagara Falls: Cave of the Winds and Bridal Veil Falls

At the Cave of the Winds attraction in Niagara State Park, visitors ride an elevator 175-feet deep into the Niagara Gorge at the base of the American Falls. A series of redwood decks and platforms allow sightseers to walk right up to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls, with the "Hurricane Deck" getting as close as 20-feet with winds reaching up to 68 mph. The decking, which be replaced each spring after the winter's ice buildup, is not secured to the rocks below by bolts but rather its wood beam supports are simply wedged into the rock crevices. The name "Cave of Winds" owes to a natural rock overhang, discovered in 1834, that allowed visitors to stand underneath Bridal Veil Falls. The Cave collapsed in the early 1900s but the name stuck.

Bridal Veil Falls, located on the America side of the Niagara River, is the smallest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. It is similar in appearance to the larger American Falls, from which it is separated by Luna Island which is just 130-feet wide, with a vertical fall of 78-feet to onto a series of talus boulders and into the Maid of the Mist pool 103-feet below. The total vertical drop is 181 feet, and its 56-foot wide crest has an elevation of 508-feet. The waterfall has also been known in the past as Luna Falls and Iris Falls.

Niagara Falls State Park overlooks the Niagara Gorge and within its boundaries are the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, a portion of the Horseshoe Falls, and Goat Island. Created in 1885 to the design of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, it is the oldest continuously-operating state park in the United States and the first to be established via eminent domain. Prior to being protected, the lands surrounding Niagara River were largely controlled by private interest until, behind Olmsted's advocacy, the state began purchasing and converting it for public access. In addition to its views of the falls and miles of trails, today the park allows access to the restaurants, Maid of the Mist tour boats, Cave of the Winds, and the Prospect Point Observation Tower.
