San Francisco - Golden Gate Park: Music Concourse

            The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, located at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, features one of the finest collections of American paintings in the United States from Colonial times through the 20th century, as well as decorative arts and crafts; Western and non-Western textiles; and arts from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.  The current museum building was built in 2005 to the design of Herzog & de Meuron and principal architects Fong & Chan.  

The museum was first established in 1895 after the California Midwinter International Exposition. It was originally housed in an Egyptian style structure which had been the Fine Arts Building at the fair.  The building was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1906 and replaced in 1929 with a Spanish Renaissance style structure.  In 1972, as part of the creation of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the de Young's collection of European art was sent to the Legion of Honor and the museum received the organization's anthropological holdings.  The new building was badly damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and demolished.

Constructed of warm, natural materials including copper, stone, wood and glass, the new de Young blends with and complements its natural surroundings.  The copper facade is perforated and textured to replicate the impression made by light filtering through a tree canopy. The building's copper skin, chosen for its changeable quality through oxidation, will assume a rich patina over time.  The northeast corner features a twisting 144-foot tower that spirals from the ground floor and aligns at the top with the grid formed by the streets of the Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods surrounding the park. A public observation floor offers panoramic views of the entire Bay Area.

The Spreckels Temple of Music, also called the Bandshell, located in the Music Concourse of Golden Gate Park, was designed by the Reid Brothers in 1899 and named for Claus Spreckels.  The inaugural concert was held on California's Admission Day, 1900. It was seriously damaged in the 1906 earthquake and temporarily closed following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.  The Music Concourse is a sunken, oval-shaped open-air plaza originally excavated for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894.

Golden Gate Park was carved out of sand and shore dunes known as the "outside lands" in an unincorporated area west of then-San Francisco's borders in the 1870's.  Running 3 miles east to west and about a half mile north to south, it covers a rectangular plot of 1,017 acres--20% larger than New York's Central Park. With 13 million visitors annually, Golden Gate is the third most visited city park in the United States after Central Park and Lincoln Park in Chicago.
