Atlanta - Downtown: Bank of America Plaza

            Bank of America Plaza, colloquially known as The Pencil Building, located at 600 Peachtree Street NE, was built from 1991 to 1992 to the Art Deco design of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates LLC. At 55-stories and 1,040-feet high, it was the ninth tallest building in the world and the sixth tallest in the United States at the time of its completion. As of 2013, it still remains the tallest building in the United States outside of Chicago and New York City. 

Developed by Cousins Properties, it was originally intended to be C&S Plaza, the headquarters for Citizens & Southern National Bank, which merged with Sovran Bank during construction. By the time it opened it was known as NationsBank Plaza or NationsBank Building after the 1991 hostile takeover of C&S/Sovran by NCNB. 

The Plaza is crowned by a stepped open-lattice steel pyramid tapers to a 90-foot tall obelisk-like spire, covered largely by 23-karat gold leaf. The pyramid glows a yellow-orange at night. Located on a 3.7 acres site, the tower is set back from and at a 45-degree angle to the city's street grid, maximizing views to the north and south.
