Built between 2014 and 2019, this complex of Contemporary high-rise buildings were planned by Pelli Clarke Pelli architects and built on an area of land at the confluence of the north and south branches of the Chicago River that previously was occupied by a surface parking lot. Two towers, the commercial Salesforce Tower and residential Wolf Point West Tower, were designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, with architects of record being HKS Architects and Pappageorge Haymes Partners, respectively, with the residential Wolf Point East Tower being designed by bKL Architecture. The towers are all clad in dark blue-tinted glass curtain walls, with simple, rectilinear forms that include setbacks near the top of the buildings and narrower penthouses, low-slope roofs, and landscaped gardens and plazas at the base, which cascade down to the Chicago River. The tallest tower, the Salesforce Tower, also known as Wolf Point South Tower, stands 60 stories and 835 feet (254 meters) tall, housing office space, and was built in 2020-2023. The second-tallest tower, the Wolf Point East Tower, stands 60 stories and 668 feet (203 meters) tall, and was built in 2017-2020. The shortest of the three towers, the Wolf Point West Tower, stands 48 stories and 485 feet (147 meters) tall, and was built in 2014-2016. The towers, while being some of the newest additions to the Chicago skyline, stand at a location with immense historical significance, as Wolf Point, where the north and south branches of the Chicago River converge on a channel connecting them to Lake Michigan, was where the modern city of Chicago began in the 1820s, with the city’s first three taverns, hotel, ferry service, pharmacy, church, theater, and bridges across the Chicago River were all located. The land has been owned by the Kennedy family since the 1940s, whom bought it from the family of Marshall Field along with the adjacent Merchandise Mart. The site has seen many periods of growth of the city of Chicago, with the present day development of the trio of new skyscrapers being the latest chapter.
