VFA 127 FA-18 162416 simulated MiG-29 04-10-1-37

            Airshow / open house at Castle Air Force Base in California's Central Valley, just next to Atwater, on Highway 99. 2004. This FA-18 is painted to simulate a MiG-29 in Iraqi colors and quasi-Soviet markings (The "O2" is Soviet cold-war style, not Iraqi Air Force style)

Note the gray paint at the tip of the nose, on the fuselage aft of the rudders, and at the tips of the rudders. In the distance, the beige, brown and black colored parts would give the illusion of a MiG-29, including the engine air intake suggested by the diagonal black line. I don't know if the dimensions match, but the proportions do. The Navy isn't training its people to fight F/A-18s (or F-14s, A-4s or Israeli Kfir/F-21 Lions) or F-5s. Its training them to fight MiGs and Sukhois, so the US hardware is painted to look like MiGs and Sukhois . And painted *unlike* US and likely allies.
