Tunupa and Salar de Uyuni - a photo on Flickriver

            The northern edge of the largest salt flat in the world is bounded by Tunupa, a shield volcano (built up by multiple eruptions) rising to 17,457 feet/ 5321 m.  The Salar de Uyuni is already high, despite being in one of the lowest parts of the Altiplano at 12,000 ' / 3700 m.  The Salar floods seasonally (summer season, November-March), but with a shallow layer of supersaturated saline water no deeper than 4 inches/ 10 cm.  During the dry season salt polygons form across the Salar with raised rims.

A late day thunderstorm cell is building up over the summit of Tunupa, providing some lovely late-day sky drama.  Tunupa's summit is a colorful mix of iron and sufur minerals.  Emergent salt deposits create the linear features across the water in the foreground
