            I found this lovely clump of cacti growing under the canopy of a juniper in the South Fork of Horse Canyon in the Maze District of Canyonlands NP.  Scarlet hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus coccineus) is found throughout the desert southwest of North America, preferentially occurring in shaded habitats.  There are multiple genetic varieties across the species' geographic range, differentiated by the spine numbers and lengths.

Seeing beautiful cactus flowers often reminds me of the scene in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance where John Wayne brings Vera Miles a potted cactus with flowers (clearly looks like plastic though), which Jimmy Stewart downplays in comparison to roses... darn those city slicker lawyers!
