Marlboro Point Sunset - a photo on Flickriver

            Located between Dead Horse Point and Island in the Sky, Marlboro Point looks out on two joined rock prominences and Shafer Canyon, with the Needles District of Canyonlands and Abajo Mountains off in the distance. The sunlit rock is mostly Wingate sandstone, deposited as massive sand dunes around 200 million years ago.

The view from Marlboro point doesn't pick up the warmest light at sunset due to a fairly close canyon rim to the west (right), but does look lovely in the golden hour light, and after sunset (or at sunrise) when clouds light up in warm colors. A storm had moved off in the early afternoon, and by sunset the sky rapidly cleared, so this was the best light I got.

The origin of the name of the point is sketchy- it doesn't appear on any official USGS documents nor is it mentioned in any of the place name sources I found. A photo in a Smithsonian web page suggests this is where the original cigarette ad was filmed, but I've found no support for that (and spent too much time looking at commercials to evaluate the claim). My guess is that someone thought this resembled "Marlboro country" and named it accordingly.
