Palisades of the Desert - a photo on Flickriver

            The scene from the aptly named Desert View, looking north towards Marble Canyon, with the Colorado River shining in the late afternoon light. On the right is the wall that makes up the Palisades of the Desert, with Comanche Point rising the highest of the group.The north rim of the canyon of the Little Colorado River is visible on the right behind Comanche Point. In the distance the Vermilion Cliffs catch a bit of waning light.

Near this part of the South Rim García López de Cárdenas became the first Spaniard to view the Grand Canyon in 1540. Cárdenas despaired of the vast barrier that kept the conquistadors from searching for treasure. 

The stacked lenticular cloud hints at the oncoming storm, which had prompted high wind warning for the canyon. Thankfully the highest velocity winds occurred at night, and didn't interfere with hiking the next day.
