Our House: Topaz Hard Sketch, PS Inverse

I’ve been working on a portfolio of renderings which depict the essence of our home in Streetsville, Ontario, Canada. I’ve promised the girls their choices of renderings which I will upload to Imagekind and purchase for them. I’ll likely have them printed on canvas. The girls can frame the renderings as they wish. Karen will also choose one. Which one (s), if any, do you like?

The style of our home is “Ontario Farmhouse”, and it features a number of “Victorian Gothic” details. It was once part of the rural setting, but now it is situated well within the town. It was built by Samuel Brookbank in 1859. Brookbank was a house framer by trade, and the house is fairly over-built. The Brookbanks raised thirteen children who slept head-to-toe in the large upstairs bedroom.

The original cladding was stucco-over-rubble brick, and there were Tudor half-frame elements. Wish I had the money to restore it to its original appearance. In the 1950s, the cladding was falling apart, so the owner finished the façade with metal siding. We’ve changed the colour from white to warm beige. The white woodwork now pops out a lot better than it did.

The home is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, and there is a plaque on the verandah, just off the driveway
