Capillaries of the desert - a photo on Flickriver

            This image resembles capillary systems of the body, such as circulatory (blood stream) or respiratory (lungs) systems, hence the title.  A drone was used flying at 400 feet above this dry lake bed to capture 2 images, which were stitched in post-processing.  What you're seeing are trenches eroded by water draining from right to left.  This lake has 2 levels, a very large upper level, and a small lower level.  Infrequent rains collect on the upper level, then drain into the lower level, which can remain wet year-round.  Opening this image fully will allow you to see the great amount of detail in the dried mud, with the fine "capillaries" beginning where the drainage begins. Transverse erosion near the base of the "tree" is likely due to fracture patterns in the slope which capture water and flowed and right-angles to the normal drainage.
If flickr could show vertical panormas, I would post it as a vertical image, but, we had to compromise :-)
