Manoanoa Shaw's grave - a photo on Flickriver

Thomas Jay Williams noted in his biography of Priscilla Lydia Sellon: "these little Hawaiians brought to Ascot in 1865, and others who came in 1867, strongly appealed to Dr. Pusey's affection and sympathy, particularly little Palemo Kekeekaakapu, the fiery-spirited grand-daughter of a warrior chieftainess who led her forces against the enemy on horseback, and gentle Manoanoa Rose Shaw, both in due course received as Child Oblates of the Love of Jesus, both early victims of la maladie des elus (tuberculosis?), both laid to rest in the Sisters' cemetery at Ascot. Only one of these children returned to Hawaii, Keomailani Lily Shaw, sister of Manoanoa, who after her return to Honolulu was married to Mr. Wray Taylor, organist of St. Andrew's Cathedral The Priory of Jesus Christ at Ascot in Berkshire was the first Anglican convent to be opened in England."

The site and some of the buildings were paid for by Dr Edward Pusey using an inheritance from his mother, Lady Lucy Pusey.

It was owned by the Second Order of the Society of the Most Holy Trinity, of which 'Mother Lydia' (Priscilla Lydia Sellon) was the head. In addition to the convent, there was a large convalescent home.

A Burial Ground for the sisters was consecrated by the Bishop of Oxford and Mother Lydia's body was laid to rest under the large cross. Her successors were laid alternately either side. The sisters' graves are marked with plain wooden crosses.

The last Reverend Mother died in 2004 and the Sisterhood officially ceased to exist. The Priory is now given over to the care of the elderly and infirm.

The estate is particularly beautiful in the autumn because of the number of exceptional mature trees. Open paths and walks run beneath the trees and the whole place has a very special atmosphere.
