Martin Harvey in France - a photo on Flickriver

            The actor John Martin Harvey gave this one-off performance at a military base on the Western Front during the First World War.

The War Office eventually allowed performers to entertain the troops abroad in February 1915, after the initiative of the actress Lena Ashwell: ‘whatever cheers the warrior helps to win the war’ won royal backing from Princess Helena Victoria, an support from the women's auxilliary committee of the YMCA.. 

By the summer of 1916 Lena Ashwell's groups had put on over 2,000 concerts in hospitals, tents, canteens and YMCA huts on the western and eastern fronts, with entertainment including violin solos, string quartets, operatic arias, extracts from plays, poetry recitals and lectures as well as more comic offerings.. 

In a letter to Ashwell, Martin Harvey wrote of his visit to France: 'It has been one of the most memorable incidents of my life, and I cannot tell you how grateful I am to you for making it possible. My only regret is that whilst it gives any enjoyment to those splendid fellows out there, I could not stay longer.'

During World War I he and his wife, the actress Nina de Silva, toured Britain giving military recruitment lectures and raising money for the Red Cross and other charities, most notably the Nation's Fund for Nurses.
