Sarajevo Clock Tower - Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Under the wise leadership of people such as the second governor Gazi Husrev-beg, Sarajevo grew at a rapid rate in Ottoman Era. Gazi Husrev-beg was the city’s greatest donor who built most of what is now the Old Town, including the city's clock tower (Sahat Kula). During Ottomans Sarajevo became known for its large marketplace and numerous mosques, which by the middle of the 16th century were over a hundred in number. Sarajevo became one of the most advanced cities in Europe. It had its own water system, clock tower, bathhouses, and schools. In a time when education was merely for the wealthy, and most Europeans considered baths to be unhealthy, Sarayliyas (Sa-ray-lee-yas, residents of Sarajevo) were among the cleanest and most culturally advanced commoners on the continent. A famous Sarajevan poet of the time wrote, "There it seems to man that he can live for a long time, for in a thousand places in Sarajevo flows water from the well of longevity". At its height, Sarajevo was the biggest and most important Ottoman city in the Balkans after Istanbul itself.

Pod mudrim vodjstvom ljudi kao sto je bio drugi guverner Sarajeva, Gazi Husrev-beg, Sarajevo se u doba Otomanskog carstva razvijalo nevjerovatnom brzinom. Gazi Husrev-beg je kao veliki prijatelj grada Sarajeva pomogao da se izgradi vecina onoga sto sada pripada Starom Gradu, ukljucujuci i Sahat Kulu. Tokom vladavine Otomana Sarajevo je postalo poznato po svom velikom trgovinskom centru kao i brojnim dzamijama kojih je do 16. stoljeca bilo vise od 100. Sarajevo je postao jedan od najnaprednijih gradova Evrope. Imalo je svoj vodovodni sistem, sahat kulu, javna kupatila i skole. U vrijeme kada je edukacija bila samo za povlastene i bogate, i kada je vecina Evroplajna smatrala da su kupatila nezdrava, Sarajlilje su spadale u jedne od najcistijih i kulturno najnadahnutijih nacija na kontinentu. Slavi pjesnik toga doba je napisao: "Ovdje se covjeku cini da moze zivjeti vjecno, jer od hiljadu mjesta u Sarajevu voda tece s izvora dugovjecnosti." U svom jeku Sarajevo je odmah poslije Istanbula bio najveci i najvazniji dio Otomanskog carstva na Balkanu.
