Route 227 at Shortlands Station - a photo on Flickriver

            Stagecoach London has retained the contract for route 227, starting Saturday 23rd June. The route has joined the small but select band of London Buses routes operating 12m Mercedes Citaros, which are ideal for busy routes such as this that are restricted to single-deck. Unusually for a route that has remained with the same operator and at the same depot, the buses all entered service en-masse on the first day of the new contract rather than being phased in - there are 13 for a PVR of 12.

23110 is seen passing under the railway bridge at Shortlands Station; the reason for this route being restricted to single deck is very obvious! It is not possible to lower the road here due to the presence of The Ravensbourne brook. 

The 227 is a long-established and busy route between Crystal Palace and Bromley North Station; at one time it ran on to Chislehurst. It was operated by crew RFs until January 1971, when it was converted to One Man (sic) Operation using high-capacity standee AEC Swifts, the SMS type. The route has always been operated by Bromley (TB) Garage, apart from a period during the 1990s when it was operated by Kentish Bus (since absorbed by Arriva) from their Garage at Dunton Green, near Sevenoaks.
