Ocotillo - a photo on Flickriver

Ocotillo

            The tall plant in this picture is an ocotillo, a hardy native of the region.  Extended dry spells will leave the plant looking dead though it is actually just waiting for a bit of moisture to come along after which leaves sprout from the branches for a time.  In the late spring fiery red blooms appear at the tips of the branches.  This visit to South Mountain was made after an unusually rainy winter, and all of the plants were making the most of their brief spring respite from the dry desert climate.
