Cass, West Virginia - a photo on Flickriver

            Built as a company town to harvest the Red Spruce Trees from Shavers Fork to Cass, encompassing 170,000 acres. Population of 1600 with 400 kids in school. West Virginia Pulp and Paper, now Westvaco, owned the enterprise after buying West Virginia Spruce Lumber Company.  The mill had two band saws, a pulp wood handling operation. The company owned the Baldwin Coal Mines that supplied coal for the mill and its locomotives until they played out in the 1930's. The mine's railroad exited the mountain at Slaty Fork. A smaller pulp wood facility was at Spruce atop the mountain near Bald Knob.  The company had another operation for a while at  Davis, WV.  Another 100,000 acres of timber holding was purchased allowing the mill to operate into the 1960.  Shown is the depot with the steel framed hay storage building to the right.  The Cass Company Store in background.  West Virginia saved this historical company town and ran the Cass Scenic Railroad for many years.  Now, the Durbin to Greenbriar Valley RR out of Elkins manages the rails. Many of the houses are restored and rented on a daily basis.
