Lanier Mansion in Madison, Indiana - a photo on Flickriver

            James Lanier built his Greek Revival style mansion in 1844 beside the Ohio River. He was an attorney, banker and owned a very profitable rail that ran from Madison to Indianapolis.  During the Civil War he made an unsecured loan of over one million dollars to the State of Indiana.  This kept the state solvent and funded troops for the Union Army.  The mansion and grounds are well maintained and opened for tours.
