LINΞΛS 7772 @ Petit-Enghien/Lettelingen 🇧🇪

Eerst en vooral: deze foto is gemaakt met toestemming van de verantwoordelijke van de werf.

Terwijl de blauwe (maar natuurlijk ook de rode) Eurostars eind augustus tussen Silly en Halle via L94 hun weg zochten op de rit tussen Frankrijk en Brussel (in plaats van via de gebruikelijke hogesnelheidslijn), werd er op die L1 natuurlijk duchtig gewerkt.

Naast een aantal werftreinen met onder andere nieuwe langgelaste rails en ballast, was de meest spectaculaire werftrein voor mij toch wel de trein waarin de RU 800 S van de Oostenrijkse firma Swietelsky ingesloten was en die ik op donderdag 21 augustus te pakken kreeg ter hoogte van Petit-Enghien. De taken van de RU 800 S zijn trouwens veelvuldig (filmpje!): de machine vervangt de afgedankte dwarsliggers, verwijdert de ballast en zeeft deze. Vervolgens egaliseert de RU 800 S het spoor opnieuw om de juiste geometrie te herstellen.

Het zeven van de ballast (filmpje!) houdt het volgende in:
• het verwijderen van vuile of vervuilde stenen (door aarde, zand, gras, fijn gesteente, enz.),
• het zeven van deze stenen (een soort mechanische zeef),
• het terugwinnen van de bruikbare stenen (juiste grootte),
• het verwijderen van de te fijne deeltjes
• en het indien nodig aanvullen met nieuwe ballast.

Dit voorkomt waterophoping (risico op ijsvorming en instabiliteit), ongelijkmatige zetting van de spoorstaven en het verlies van comfort en veiligheid bij hoge snelheden.

Terwijl aan de ene kant van de werftrein met de RU 800 S een koppel G1206 van Colas Rail stond, zorgde aan de andere kant de 7772 van LINΞΛS voor de tractie van de ballasttrein.
De 7772 was hier trouwens net terug met een zevental ballastwagons vanuit de basis op L1 ter hoogte van de industriezone van Tubize waar de oude ballast overgeheveld werd op vrachtwagens voor het verdere transport en de verwerking.

While the blue (but of course also the red) Eurostars were making their way between Silly and Halle via L94 at the end of August on the route between France and Brussels (instead of the usual high-speed line), work was naturally in full swing on that L1.

Besides a number of yard trains carrying, among other things, new long-welded rails and ballast, the most spectacular yard train for me was the one containing the RU 800 S from the Austrian company Swietelsky, which I caught on Thursday, August 21st, near Petit-Enghien. The RU 800 S performs a variety of tasks (little movie!): it replaces discarded sleepers, removes ballast and screens it. The RU 800 S then levels the track again to restore the correct geometry.

Ballast screening (little movie!) involves the following:
• removing dirty or contaminated stones (e.g., soil, sand, grass, fine rock, etc.),
• screening these stones (a kind of mechanical sieve),
• recovering usable stones (the correct size),
• removing particles that are too fine,
• and replenishing them with new ballast if necessary.

This prevents water accumulation (risk of ice formation and instability), uneven rail settlement, and loss of comfort and safety at high speeds.

While a Colas Rail G1206 coupler was on one end of the construction train with the RU 800 S, the LINΞΛS 7772 provided traction for the ballast train on the other end. Incidentally, the 7772 had just returned here with seven ballast wagons from the base at L1 near the Tubize industrial estate, where the old ballast was transferred to trucks for further transport and processing.
