River Rising

            All of the rain in Northern Illinois has caused incredible flooding (for August) north of I-80. All that water is moving downstate now and the Illinois River is no exception. Fortunately, the river crested yesterday at about 4.5' over flood level. In downtown Peoria this means the river is about 12 feet higher then it was a week ago and only about one foot below the large flood wall on the west side of the river.

Typically you can walk on the docks and decking that floats on the river and floodwall looms a good six feet over your head. Today you can literally step off that decking DOWN onto the top of the floodwall and that's kinda weird. The CEFCU Center Stage area is completely flooded because water is spilling up from the storm drains. The water is also really muddy - so an interesting juxtaposition of color exists between the dark blue sky and the dark brown water. Our friends on the visiting LST 325 are also stranded in town - probably for another 3-4 days because the river is much more dangerous to navigate right now. They're headed about 30 miles upriver to Henry, IL, but it will have to wait.

A composite image from a single RAW file - overexposed for the river and underexposed for the sky. The sky layer was laid over the river layer and the river erased.
